Choy Li Fut was founded by Chan Heung in 1836. He was taught by 2 Shaolin monks; Choy Fok and Li Yau San. His uncle, Chan Yuen Woo, a renown martial artists also helped train Chan Hueng's in his early years. 'Fut' is the chinese word for Buddah.

Choy Li Fut uses agile northern Shaolin footwork in combination with southern Shaolin explosive fist. The three major branches of Choy Li Fut taught at the Golden Lion are: Fut San, King Mui and Jiang Men (Kong Chow).

For self-defense and physical training, Choy Li Fut is ideal. The moves are designed to be effective when used by any body type, giving most people the ability to learn Choy Li Fut thoroughly and to master many of its techniques. Choy Li Fut forms develop the student's muscles and bones, conditioning the body evenly. Each movement is natural, loose and relaxed, making it easier to develop strong power in the practitioner.

As a method of improving health and physical fitness, Choy Li Fut forms provide excellent cardiovascular exercise. The movements include sophisticated handwork, coupled with a wide variety of fast moving footwork, and 36 well known weapons are available to the student. Choy Li Fut forms, both open hand and weapon, are not only powerfully effective, but also flowing, circular, and beautiful to watch.

Choy Li Fut training includes the fundamentals of martial arts training: basics, forms, joint locks, sparring (including ground sparring), lion dancing and internal training.
