November 4 & 5,  2006

Taipei,   Taiwan

A team around 80 competitiors from  the Plum Blossom Internation Federation headed to Taipei, Taiwan for their 1st Tai Chi World Competition.   The competition was held at the Taipei Arena.

A 14 hour flight to Hong Kong, then a 2 hour flight into Taipei, Taiwan.   We left on Thursday , November 2nd, 12:30am,  and arriving in Taipei Friday, November 3rd, at 2:00pm.

We went into downtown Taipei to sightsee for a few hours.  At 6:00pm we went to a great restaurant for a chinese banquet.  We dined on some great local dishes, finally headed back to the Hotel at 10:00pm.

1st day competition:

The Plum Blossom competitors arrived at the gymnasium at 7:30am for weigh in.  We participated in the open ceremony where the countries marched into the competition arena.   Soon after a group of 300 Tai Chi performs demonstrated various forms.   A spectacular sight.

Right away the pushhands competition started.   With a frenzied of names being called out, in Mandarin and heavy accent english, everyone was looking on.   At other side of the arena, the group and single tai chi forms were in competition.

Fixed step pushhands: Each match was 40 seconds long and it was the best of 3 matches. The competitors feet were on 2 inch high, circular platforms.   If you lifted your foot or slid off the platform, you lost a point.
